Bruce retired from the U. S. Coast Guard in 2014 after a 30 year career which included command of Sector Columbia River/Air Station Astoria, Sector Lake Michigan, and Air Station New Orleans. Bruce led the Coast Guard's air rescue operations in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Immediately prior to his assignment to Astoria in 2011, he led the Coast Guard's Office of Strategic Analysis in Washington, D.C. He holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University, and a B.A. from Washington and Lee University.
Bruce worked as a helicopter pilot for the Columbia River Bar Pilots from 2014-2016. He has volunteered his time serving on several nonprofit boards in Astoria including Friends of the Astoria Armory, Friends of the Astoria Column, United Way of Clatsop County, and the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Bruce and his wife Linda enjoy maintaining their 130 year old home in Alderbrook. Bruce was elected to the Astoria City Council in 2017 and is the deputy director of the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
