Fire

The Astoria Fire Department is responsible for fire suppression and emergency medical response, which is coordinated with the local ambulance service (Medix) for the City of Astoria. The department also contracts with the Tongue Point Job Corps Center, Coast Guard property at Tongue Point along with USCG cutters Alert and Steadfast to offer fire suppression and emergency medical services.

Staff consists of a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, nine career firefighters, six intern firefighters and volunteer firefighters and a department Support Clerk. Together the firefighters handle about 1300 calls per year (over 60% EMS).

The Astoria Fire Department is also home to "HazMat 11", the regional Hazardous Materials response team for the Office of State Fire Marshal which covers Clatsop and part of Columbia County. The department is also involved in emergency preparedness and the Maritime Fire Safety Association.

APPLICATION PERIOD FOR OUR INTERN FIREFIGHTER SCHOLARSHIP POSITION IS NOW OPEN!

Our Student Internship program is an exciting and fun opportunity for students who are interested in a career in Firefighting or Emergency Medical Services to gain experience while attending college classes. Students work the same schedule as the career firefighting staff, and in return the Fire Department awards them with a full scholarship to Clatsop Community College. While on duty each Student Intern gains valuable hands on experience at emergency incidents, as well as learning the normal day to day activities common among career or combination career/ volunteer fire departments.

For many of our student interns, our program is a helpful way of achieving their goal of getting hired as a full time Firefighter/EMT. For others, our program is a good learning environment in which students can safely get a very in-depth perspective of the challenges, both mentally and physically, which face such a demanding career, and gives them the opportunity to decide if such a career is right for them.
