ASTORIA, January 26 - The City of Astoria is pleased to announce that Geoff Spalding has accepted the position of Astoria Chief of Police. Chief Spalding has been the Interim Chief of Police since August 2017.
Since joining the Astoria Police Department, Chief Spalding has been involved in the creation of the Mayor’s Homelessness Solutions Task Force (HOST), amended city ordinances, and revamped multiple processes in the Department. He says that he is looking forward to finding solutions to the challenges the community is facing.
Chief Spalding has the support of the department staff. Officer Thomas Litwin, president of the Astoria Public Safety Association, said that the possibility of Spalding becoming Chief was discussed at the annual meeting in January. He says the officers are in support and are excited to be moving forward with Chief Spalding.
“I am honored to be able to continue to work with the men and women of the Astoria Police Department.” said Spalding. “This is a quality Department that is highly-regarded by our community.”
Spalding is retired from the Beaverton Police Department where he was Chief for seven and a half years. He led a progressive enforcement agency with 137 sworn officers, 40 civilian employees and 100 volunteers. Prior to working in the City of Beaverton, Spalding was with the Fullerton Police Department in California for 31 years.
“Geoff has really jumped right in with the department and in the community,” said City Manager Brett Estes, “I am exceedingly pleased he has agreed to come out of retirement to accept this position with the City. Geoff has done a great job as Interim Chief and is the right person to lead the department in to the future.”
Spalding says he and his wife, Diane, look forward to being a bigger part of the community. He says, “After just five months as Interim Chief, Astoria feels like home.”
Spalding is the past president of the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police and is a member of the Governor’s Task Force on School Safety. He is also on the Oregon Law Enforcement Leadership Forum and Post Critical Incident Video Review Workgroup.
